So I arrived on Sunday evening, where the humidity hit me like a wall of fire. Everything here is air-conditioned, so it is easier to keep cool inside rather than out. For a taste of traditional Singapore that evening, I went to the local 'Hawker' or street market for good value and tasty food.
I have got a feeling that the week ahead is going to be fantastic. This morning (Monday) I picked up my badge and the programme of events...it really is choc-a-block. Tonight is the Opening Ceremony for the SIWW where the guest of honour will be Professor S Jayakumar, Singapore's Senior Minister and Co-ordinating Minister for National Security. The rest of the week provides many opportunities for networking with Innovation Corners to regional Business Forums.
To give an idea of how important water is to Singapore, even the taxi driver from the airport to my hotel couldn't resist pointing out the award winning Marina Barrage project. Further research confirmed that CDM was the main consultant on the project working for the Public Utilities Board of Singapore.
The project has really transformed the marina bay area into a multi-purpose water resource serving functions of water supply, flood alleviation and an aesthetically pleasing lifestyle attraction. As it is built across the mouth of the Marina Channel, the other major benefit is that Singapore now has a reservoir right in the middle of the city. As with many projects in this region, two main boxes have been ticked; sustainable water supply and the enhancement of urban life.
All I want to know is how the taxi driver knew I was here for a Water event!
