Review of Singapore International Water Week

So I have been back to normal day-to-day life now for two weeks after the adventure that was Singapore International Water Week. It was really a great show and I am looking forward to next year’s event.Just to go back in time slightly, the Thursday evening was 'Dinner by the Bay' which was a social event held at the Marina Barrage and the final Friday was taken up by several technical tours available to those who were interested. The one that I enjoyed the most was the tour of the Semakau…See More

Third day at Singapore International Water Week

We may not agree on many things, but we stick by the commitment to supply Singapore with this water." This was the comment made by Malaysia's Minister for Energy, Green Technology and Water, Datuk Peter Chin Fah Kui. The reason why this is an important comment is because Singapore buys about 40% of its water from Malaysia under two international agreements, one expiring in 2011 and the other in 2061.When I saw 2061, I was a little surprised. Even though Singapore is investing heavily in its own…See More

Second Day at Singapore International Water Week

Did anyone know that 40 years ago Singapore had to rations its scare water supplies? I didn't. In talking to some staff from the Singapore Public Utilities Board (PUB) the water supply was switched off and on during the day. As you can imagine, when the supply was on, everyone rushed with whatever buckets and containers they could muster to stock up for the long humid day ahead. Further on, I'll show you how stories like these belong to the dark ages for young Singaporeans. The SIWW is really…See More

First day at Singapore International Water Week

So I arrived on Sunday evening, where the humidity hit me like a wall of fire. Everything here is air-conditioned, so it is easier to keep cool inside rather than out. For a taste of traditional Singapore that evening, I went to the local 'Hawker' or street market for good value and tasty food.I have got a feeling that the week ahead is going to be fantastic. This morning (Monday) I picked up my badge and the programme of events...it really is choc-a-block. Tonight is the Opening Ceremony for…See More
