I got back from the Power-Gen Middle East planning meeting on July 10. The event will be held in Bahrain, Feb. 17-19, 2009 at the Bahrain International Convention Center in Manama. My first trip to the Middle East. Busy place. We were at the Gulf Hotel, which was celebrating its 40th anniversary. It's across from the Grand Mosque and a Palace. Papers had articles on agreement to build three new beaches. Apparently the Gulf Hotel used to be right on the water, but they've been dredging sand from the Persian Gulf to build out the islands (archipelago really) and now there's road and series of other buildings between it and the shoreline. I counted just from my hotel view more than 20 large cranes where new skyscrapers were going up. In any case, I was serving as coordinator for the Water Track portion of the conference, the second time PennWell has included this and one they hope to expand as last year's inaugural water track was well received. With all the money from high oil prices flowing into the region, they're taking advantage of the good times by planning a host of infrastructure projects that often include a desalination component due to scarcity of freshwater resources.
