Reverse Osmosis Reject Brine Treatment

Other than evaporation ponds, dumping RO reject brine into the ocean, diluting it with fresh water, or injecting it underground, what is the best available technology for treatment of this waste product from membrane desalination? Further reverse osmosis would take too much energy, and its calcium carbonate and other scale content precludes distillation. This is an important problem standing in the way of desalination deployment in the US. Any ideas?
